Antique African Red Glass Bead Bracelet
These pretty elastic bracelets are made with antique African red glass beads. The variable patina on the beads reflects their age and use. The gold accent beads are 24K gold vermeil.
African red skunk, or eye beads, were used for trade in the 1800s. They are called African glass, but were originally from Venice, created as an acceptable form of exchange on African soil. Brightly colored glass beads from European traders were greatly admired in African cultures, and the jewelry created from them was highly valued and a symbol of wealth and social standing.
